Clyde,
Wrens are not easy to get. They have to be happy. I remember as a child
hearing my grandparents get so excited if they had wrens. I finally had luck
when I put wren houses right next to our house at about 5-6' height. I know
some people who have had them on birdhouses on their mailbox at about that
height. The family I had last year built right outside our patio door and
would chirp at us constantly as we were around, and then go on about their
business.
Wrens are tiny, smaller than sparrows, and have this little tail that sticks
straight up in the air. They have a distincive chatter when someone is around
their babies. I could always tell when our cat and dog were too close. They
have a beautiful trilling sound (male) when the female is nesting. The male
chooses the place to nest and the female must approve, or he keeps looking.
Kay Dye, Edelstein, IL Hoping they come back this year and bring the kids.
