I've been following most of the Bergenia posts with interest (although I'm a
bit slow at getting to them) because I've always liked this plant alot. My
original 2 plants, transplanted from my sister's yard in zone 3 Minnesota,
bloomed so beautifully the following spring (or was it the 2nd spring?? I
can't remember now). In fact the blooms were so perfectly round and waxy,
almost fake looking, and lasted so long, that my neighbor went to the nursery
and bought several for herself. And once the new leaves come out (replacing
the rather tattered old ones) they add such nice texture with their thick,
round, dark green leaves, growing at an unusual, someone twisted angle. But
alas, they have not bloomed that nicely since then.

Mine get morning sun and are in sandy soil that I try to water regularly. Our
summers are definitely humid here and get into the 90's sometimes, maybe 10
days/summer?? I've since added 3 others to a sunnier, drier area after
reading that they are somewhat drought tolerant once established. I will will
now look at them more critically, but even without the blooms, I'd still grow
them for their leaves.
