Moles are not eaters of roots- but maybe other animals are using their
tunnels.
Gophers or ground squirrels are good at eating roots- I remember one year
hearing a strange noise and then a large bean plant fell over. That was a
weird experience as it happened three times in a row as the gopher just went
down the row eating the roots off the been plants.
