A large patch of this is in bloom on the northeast corner of the new (to
us) house. Half of it is in a bright medium pink, the other half in a dark
pinkish red. The two colors go well together. A bit gaudy but quite
beautiful, and it has a good habit, with sturdy stems. It seems to do fine
in full shade. I note it is very vigorous but seems to stay where it was
planted, so not invasive. Wyman's says it is a good cut flower. it also
says its Latin name is Chrysanthemum coccineum, which I suspect has been
changed to something else by now.
Question: has this ever been discussed on Shadegardens? I don't recall
that it has. It would make a dandy perennial for almost anybody with some
shade. Wyman's says there is a white form, and also double forms. I'd love
some white, if it is as good a doer as the pinks and reds. I don't know
anyone else who grows it, and I've never seen it for sale in a nursery or
catalog that i recall. Is it out of style, or what? Or have I just not
noticed it? (Hard to believe when it is so spectacular!)
