Arnhild, my best friend spent last fall in Thailand. She brought home a lot
of seeds as a gift for me, and frankly, many of them did not germinate. I
suspect they were cooked by the high temperatures in Thailand. I just
talked to her, and she said she saw no hostas in Thailand or Lao, she
thinks perhaps it's too hot for them. She did say there are farm and garden
markets in every town, so if your son wants to buy seeds, he could. She
suggested he take a bare minimum of stuff in his backpack because he can
buy necessities in SE Asia very cheaply. Your son could stay in touch with
you via e-mail, couldn't he? There are cyber cafes in Europe and Africa,
at least, where one can rent a computer (I'm pretty sure they're available
in southeast Asia, too, because I did get e-mails from Lindarose while she
was gone). Be sure your son gets a Yahoo account (free) so he can access
e-mail from you, too. Sounds like he'll have a wonderful
