I just bought this plant today...I love the folliage. I was told it
spreads
quickly as all Lysimachias do, especially if the soil is moist. Has anyone
tried growing this plant in a bottomless container? Is this a good idea or
do
you think it's not that aggressive?

 Hi Cindy!
I am asking with a cc for Robyn Duback to tell us.
Robyn--give us details and if you wouldn't mind, would you fly here and plant
these beauties? (BTW, folks, you can get 3! clumps of it for $8 from Robyn's
Nest . robydub@aol.com) >>

Hi Cindy, Clyde, and other Shadegardeners. My personal experience with this
plant has been pleasurable, but keep in mind that this is the Pacific
Northwest. My understanding is some, possibly most, maybe all Lysimachia can
take over the neighborhood in the South. My plant has been in the garden for
6-7 years, in an area which if anything, I would describe as being on the dry
side, as I simply can't get the sprinklers moved to that area frequently
enough. Some of the plant has been dug out now and then to supply the
nursery, and at this point my clump is perhaps 4 feet in diameter.

I have L. clethroides in the garden, also, and for more than several years I
couldn't understand what all the fear was about. Then, one year I divided it,
and found that gave it all the encouragement it needed to start popping up in
the middle of neighboring plants. (I will add that when I decided it outgrew
its space and wanted to move it, it was quite easy to dig out.) I have not
had this experience with L. ciliata purpurea.

As far as flying out to plant them for you, Clyde, you'd better entice your
dog into digging some holes. You know how I hate flying! :-)
