Hi Sherryl,
  Wood ashes have alot of nutrients-potassium,phosphorus and calcium. They
also are very alkaline, so you don't want to use much around acid loving
plants.
  I have heard that wood ashes should not be used around young plants.Best to
wait
until they are a year old.
  I have used Diatomaceous Earth around my plants for slug control.It works
really well and can be used around newbie plants. It doesn't effect the soils
acidity either.
