ahhhhhhh, grasshopper.....................
the thing you seek is not the thing you seek.
1st...congrats on diameters of 1", this is quite good for such a young plant.
ya, it's hard to notice those 10 footers. the bamboo is actually running in
both directions, which you will notice next year at this time. it is never
too late. since there is only one shooting season, those visible canes will
be your entiree crop for this shooting season. a few will appear in a few
weeks, but will die.
any unwanted canes can be removed now, although if you can spare the room
until next spring, you will be rewarded by excellent quality black canes.
dont try to cut for crafts or transplant yet. if a cane is cut before it's a
year old, it will be useless.
yes, is is the dessication of the wind that defoliates the boos. bending the
culms may work in your case. remember that they will refoliate. here in 7a,
theydefiliate every couple years, so we are used to it.
as far as green menace, i will come and remove those offending canes for only
a nominal charge. the rarity of the p. nigra is still great enough to cause
me to get every scrap i can.
oh ya, and i'll have i pic to share with y'all next week that finally puts to
an end the persistant rumour that boo is invasive.
