Re: [SG] dogwood
Karen-
There are lots of different kinds of dogwoods, and lots of different kinds of
blooming patterns. In my limited experience, there's a fair amount of
variation (tree to tree, year to year) among the standard eastern dogwood
(Cornus florida) varieties...and there must be a dozen or more! And the
species...Cornus kousa generally has smaller blossoms after leaf-out, Cornus
nutallii (the Pacific Dogwood) larger & upward facing, and C. ambigua, C. mas,
C. alternifolia and others very different presentations and sizes of flowers,
but yet all readily recognizable as dogwoods. The largest blooms seem to be on
C. nutallii and C. x nutalli "Eddie's White Wonder", a nutallii kousa hybrid.
So don't get to excited yet...but if repeats next year, then send me cuttings
too!
