When I first kept chickens, I let them run loose and roost in the
trees. I'd have to search hard for the eggs, and the raccoons would
pluck them from the branches for midnight snacks. Then I built a
chicken house with laying boxes and a run fenced top and sides with
chicken wire. Just like my grandmothers used to have. But I let my
chickens out every day. I'd feed them grain in the run at
suppertime. They'd all come running to be fed, I'd close the door to
the pen and they'd be safe for the night. If there was a day when I
wouldn't be able to do that, they could just stay in the pen that day.
I had all kinds of beautiful chickens. Silver-spangled Hamburgs,
fluffy white Silkies, Auracanas that laid blue eggs and lots more.
I'd go to the fall fair and find out who exhibited the different
