If you have less area to rake,  the hand-held leaf blower/shredders made by
Black and Decker and Toro also work really well and are less costly. They
won't chip, though, so you can't use them for brush clippings. The critical
thing is the ability to vacuum..I used to use a Vornado, which is a
stationary shredded that uses a string (like an upside down weed whacker).
It works fine, but I had to bring the leaves to it, and it created clouds
of lung clogging dust and dirt. The protable vacuums don't do that.
