In contrast to Marge's experience of the fronds looking ratty in
August, the fronds in my clump still looked pretty good through the
end of September. Prhaps the plant needs to hang onto its leaves
longer in the year if it's not getting much light. The fertile fronds
remain through the winter, when they make a nice accent.
Mine is in a dry location and the leaves are all gone already-just leaving
the attractive brown "flower" stems.
In the woods, were they grow around low spots they are nice dense stands and
when we have our first frost will turn a golden yellow color. Thus the name
'Sensitive Fern.'
Our native 'Maiden Hair fern' is still my favorite fern, with dark purple
stems and dark spring foliage. The oddest ferns I have grown are the 'Grape
Ferns' -- though my success has not been so good.
