Same here though it is pretty cold where I am located and short seasoned.
Thought I would comment that we do not grow ferns as they are native all over
our farm. The deeply shaded and dry woods are full of Christmas ferns. Many
others are here including small rare ferns that grow in rock crevices. All
volunteer finding the very best place to begin life is in the endless clumps of
moss. (A good place to start other woody seeds) The ferns predominate in
the woods and around the ponds now because - deer do not eat ferns. The only
emerging spring plants in most places beside in the rocky woods are now ferns.
I would think that ferns are a good choice to begin with if you are visited
by deer. All other spring plants if not entirely gone now are very hard to
find.
