I will throw in a few of my favorites for dry, under the tree companions.

White Baneberrry (actea)
Celadine Poppy
Pulmonaria
Varieg. Sol Seal
Tovara (it's now polygonatum?) the variegated that used to be called Plantes'
Palette, and lesser variegated don't know name.
ginger

I think all of these would do your zones.  Mine are growing in an area that is
very dry, and they do well.
