Re: [SG] gardening as a profession

Carmel,
I have been gardening for over 25 years. Most of these years I have had
a greenhouse which in the beginning was a fun learning experience. I
have gone through many different phases of gardening. At one time I grew
fuchsias to sell to a local nursery. Another phase was a huge fern
collection. Cacti & succulents have also been grown & I still have a
nice collection of these.
In the most recent years I have built a hosta business with over 200
different varieties. I also grow ornamental grasses and various other
sun and shade tollerent plants.
This is what I've always wanted to do even though many of these years it
was just a hobby. To supplement the nursery I do some landscaping err
gardening!!! for others. What I really like to do is jobs for people who
don't want the builder to screw up their new homes. Speciality gardens
wheather shade or sun are a real pleasure. I proceed with much thought
and site study for the correct plants in the correct places. I offer to
do plans in some cases but even though they are computer drawn they
still take a lot of time. It really is rewarding to meet with people
that don't want the ordinary landscape and can justify paying for a
quality job which will repay them for many years to come!
Local gardening seminars or classes can be very helpful to your
education. Also master gardener classes teach many of the basics. I
guess the majority of my education comes from experience in the garden
with many mistakes made over the years. Of course specific books are
always great learning tools.
Happy Gardening, Richard Jolly
