Hmmm, Rich...are you figuring on only pleaching two actual trees or are you
looking for two different trees?
My initial reaction was Laburnum x watereri, the Golden Rain Tree, when I
saw "arch" as I have long lusted for an arched walk covered in this plant.
The cultivar 'Vossii' is said to have racemes of flowers up to two feet
long! Ah, unrequited lust... (BTW, not a good choice with small children
as the fruit is quite poisonous).
Hornbeam is used for pleached allees in Europe quite a bit; am not sure
about making an arch of two of them, but have seen hedges of them with
arched openings pruned in the hedge - takes a few years to get there:-)
If you are aiming for only two trees to create the arch, have you thought
about using apple, pear or other fruits who are often espaliered? What
you're talking about is a good deal of training and pruning and it seems to
me that the tree you select should be able to take both...and why not get
some spring flowers and/or fruit from them, too?
If you have an actual arch that you want to train the trees on (and I think
one would be necessary), you could also use vines or roses to cover
it.....just a thought since I am not exactly sure what your intent is here.
You could also use a large shrub - probably faster growing than a
tree...Viburnum spp, perhaps. Purple leaf Cotinus would be quite neat as
an arch.
I have also seen yew hedges and box hedges with arched openings pruned into
them - again, takes a few years for them to get of a size so that the arch
closes, but very nice.
Most trees will do well with afternoon sun if they aren't overhung by
larger trees or something with tender leaves like Japanese cut-leaf
maples...
Oh....I got rained out for Labor Day Weekend...YEA!! Actual water from the
sky....thank you hurricane.
