Dear Roberta and Donna,
Yes, do not get discouraged about planting iris! That was not the
intent of that email at all...I myself have just delved into growing these
beautiful flowers in my garden. I fondly remember my grandmother's iris and
I love antique/historic cultivars of all sorts of plants. You will find
that many in the iris world, as in others like roses, dahlias, etc., have
strong feelings about the things that they love. I have some books that
were published in the 1920's about irises and one of them talks about the
hardiness of the iris...returning to be green and bloom a year after being
thrown on the compost heap, for instance. Many of the ones on the Historic
Iris webpage, however, are very rare and hybrids that because of their
intricate genetics require more specialized treatment. The advice that I
gave yesterday I learned from *The Gardner's Iris Book* by Bill Shear.
