Re: Lycoris

I've grown good old Lycoris squamigera - the Surprise Lily - in partial
shade for over 15 years. Gets maybe 2 hours of direct sun a day; the rest
light shade. Blooms quite well. Has a reputation for sulking after being
lifted and moved and, as I remember, did not bloom much for me the first
couple of years I had them. Bulbs were from my mother's garden and have
increased into two fairly large clumps. Interesting thing I note about
these is that they seem to push themselves up in the soil. In a vain
effort to find something to plant in their location after the foliage dies
down, I keep adding soil mix to plant various annuals since, I can't really
dig into the area without damaging bulbs, and every year, when I engage in
my annual frustration exercise, the bulb necks are sticking out of the
soil..
