Living in the tundra in Zone 3, I do plant Siberians in OUR summer heat which is not
comparable to VA. Rarely does reach into the high 80s and almost never into the 90s (but
it has recently). I think Claire Peplowski's advice is good for your climate. Until
yesterday, some of our ground was still frozen when I tried to dig for a new bed.
I never pot outside plants but that is just me...everyone else seems to do it. If they
can't make it in the ground here, too bad. I practice tough love in my garden :-)

easily.<<<<<
They do ok here when transplanting but when I took 3 divisions (from my garden) to a
friend near here (Lee's Blue, Sprinkles and Mesa Pearl - all Ensata babies) and I planted
them myself in her garden. They lived but they are struggling. I visit them ;-) and
water them and also put pine straw as their mulch. I also gave Lake Keuka to another
friend near here (she is an experienced irisarian) and I haven't seen it yet.
I am thinking I should have given Lee's Blue, Sprinkles and Mesa Pearl a good soak for a
day before planting in my friend's garden....
**You guys with all that bloom! bah humbug (and it isn't even Christmas). We have two
crocus in bloom out of many that are green. NO daffs yet but several are budded.
Pleased that China Spring has green shoots along with I. graminea. Haven't been checking
the mess of my front gardens lately where I. typhifolia lives. I assume it is also
sprouting. The bearded are really going to town re growth. Looks like another good
season.
Cheers,
Ellen (75 here today - like summer!)
