They don't really like transplanting for me either, but they do a lot better
when I do it in Spring here in zone 5 north Idaho. Some fall planted mail
order plants never get going, or die. Spring plantings do great, relatively.
When I make new plants I avoid digging whole clumps, since they will sulk in
a new hole and I miss the flowers. So, I try to start new divisions
elsewhere, phasing out older clumps if needed. Also, I find that planting
divisions, even small ones, in pots before planting in the garden ensures
very rapid success. Maybe the better water control and drainage in a pot
helps them get going. Some of the best plants I ever started were of puny
green thumb-sized blobs of leafless and almost unrecognizeable single growth
root splinters from (don't scold me) Spring Hill Nurseries. They took off
like monsters.... go figure.
