For us the most important thing to do to defend against voles is to get all
the foliage cut down in the fall - and the earlier the better after it starts
to fall toward the ground.
As far as getting rid of them - cats who are good hunters is a start. We
also use PVC 4" pipe tubes in which we place rat and mice poison (in the center
where the birds can't get at it.) We have neighborhood cats who hunt here and
have never been harmed by it. These are especially useful during the winter
when there is snow cover and the voles can carry on unseen.
We never completely eliminate them and there is always a bit of damage but it
is much more controlled than in the beginning. Jan Sacks
