Re: voles Temper Tantrum

Margaret,
I was just thinking about the vole problem because they did a number on some
of our Japanese irises last winter. It was an open winter and very cold.
They seemed to enjoy the beds that were most recently prepared and had soft
compost to dig through under the mulch. Perhaps one of the reasons that we
don't have trouble with the SI is that we cut them back in the fall and
leave them open all winter. In the past freezing rain has destroyed JI
that went into the winter without mulch so we always mulch the JI. negative
is that the voles love to get under the mulch and eat JI. Cats help but we
prefer the birds.
We use Marty and Jan's trick with the PVC pipe and it certainly helps.
Steve Jones convinced us to start feeding the poison as early as we can in
the fall. We refill often in the fall. During Jan thaw if we can get to
them we refill. It is a juggling act between weather, varmints and our
energy.
It has been so cold this spring that our SI are up about an inch and the JI
barely showing. We have opened up all of the mulch and found that the
biggest vole damage is in the bed of Japanese line outs and selected
seedlings. Wouldn't you know!! After stepping on the tunnels we have
turned away for a while hoping that when we return to the garden in a week
there will be less damage than we initially feared.
