Hello,
I signed up for this group last week, but haven't had a moment to
unlurk. My name might seem familiar to some of you, since I've been
a member of iristalk group for a few months, and Ellen was nice
enough to help me out with some questions a while back. I only have
a few Siberians, but the more I have the more I love them, and they
really do well for me generally.
I recently got a few Siberians at the Maine Iris Society auction, but
in a stroke of horrendous bad luck, it looks like I lost Little Blue
Sparkler within a couple of days of planting it. It went like this:
I got a nice little clump at the auction, went home and planted it
that same evening, and then got hit by some unusually hot weather (in
the 90s) for about three days, and the poor baby FRIED. I was
watering it in the morning and evening before and after work, but it
didn't help - there's not a bit of green left on it. The other two I
got (Shirley's Choice and Ruffled Velvet) look a little better, still
have some green to go with the brown, and will probably survive.
It's not a bad spot for siberians, I have Butter and Sugar and an
unknown blue just a few feet away, so it's not shock from something
in the soil. As a matter of fact, the unknown blue is so vigorous,
that when I was thinning/dividing the biggest clump of them (which I
have to do every year, because they more than double every year and
are quite invasive, I couldn't cut through the rhizomes and root
system with my spade. I was so sad to lose LBS - I absolutely fell
in love with it at the society show last month. Oh, well.
Hope to learn a lot from you folks,
Melanie Tornberg
