Her question was about the identity of an orange-yellow
mass that appeared to be growing at the base of the plant and moving up
the plant. <<<
Sounds like a fungus locally called "witches butter".
Usually begins on rotting wood (does she mulch with bark or wood chips?)
and can travel wherever there is enough moisture to keep it going.
Treatment is to gently remove as much as possible and dry the area well.
Then spray with either 10% bleach solution or anti-fungal that's safe to
use on veggies (the mildest form).
