My Siberians are currently planted in a 120 foot row on a 2 feet spacing on the side of a north facing hill. My first experience with Siberians was 4 years ago. I had 18 of them in a mixed bed with Louisianas. The location was not seen by customers visiting the garden. With the second year bloom, I liked the Siberians and especially the foliage after bloom and decided to add Siberians to my sales list. I moved the existing Siberians to their current high visibility location and purchased enough additional cultivars to fill all 60 spaces.
Each year, I have had 20% to 40% deaths of cultivars new to the garden. In most cases, I have not given the cultivar a second chance. The plant rating scale I use is 0 = dead, 1= barely surviving, 2 = okay, 3 = good, 4 = great. In the table below, some of the 2 year old 3s and 4s were a 1 the spring of the first year.
The table below is only the 3s and 4s of this past spring.
