In addition to what I have written in last message I add some
quotations from well known authorities. "IRIS OF CHINA" by James
W.Waddick and Zhao Yu-tang: pg. 97 Iris sibirica L. "...bracts three,
membraneus , green with slightly reddish purple margin, narrowly ovate
or lanceolate 4 to 5.5 cm long by 0.8 to 2 cm wide, ....." pg. 97 Iris
sanguinea Donn ex Horn. pg. 98 "...bracts three, membranous, green,
lanceolate, 5 to 7cm long about 1cm wide, ..." "THE IRIS" by Brian
Mathew: pg. 91 I.sibirica Linn. "The blue or blue-violet dark-veined
flowers are about 6-7 cm in diameter, two or three and sometimes more
being produced from each set of brown papery spathes. ..." The same
page: I.sanguinea Hornem. ex Donn. "...There are two or three flowers
in each set of green bracts and they are reddish-purple /flowers not
bracts. /, about 6-8 cm in diameter, carried on more or less equal
pedicels. ..." "THE SIBERIAN IRIS" by Currier McEwen: pg.17 Iris
sibirica "...The spathes are dry and already turning brown by
flowering time and the individual pedicels are very unequal in length.
..." Pg. 18 Iris sanguinea: "...The spathes are green and fresh at
time of flowering and often suffused with pink or red at their bases.
..." Almost the same description is given for both species in
Koehlein's "IRIS" in German language, but I think it is not worthy to
do translation. When I sent former message I used two first sources,
but when I studied, that Zhao Yu-tang has described specimen not from
wild, but from introduced from Europe and grown only in gardens, it is
obvious, that his description can be wrong and made not from true
species. At least I found one sourse in Russian "Dekoratyvnyje
rastenija" (Ornamental plants)vol. 1, where descriptions of I.
sibirica and I.sanguinea are made by famous Russian authority and
botanist Dr. G.I.Rodijonenko. Translation made by me. I.sibirica L.
"...spathes light-brown, papery. ..." In description of I.sanguinea
about spathes is given how it differs from I.sbirica: "...by
red-violet color at base of bract leaves. ..." Hope we will have now
better understanding about background of color for siberian flower
spathes and from that quatations you can do your own conclusions who
from authorities are correct.

Best regards,
