Re: systemic question

Here's are some links to websites on honeybees and the active ingredient of
Merit for anyone interested enough to pursue it further. The first site
contains a lot of links to other sites and gives an overview of the
situation, the two from Bayer are in the nature of a rebuttal of the
charges. I'm not taking sides on this!

Incidentally if you're interested in bees in general, my colleague at MSU,
Zachary Huang, runs a neat website on the subject (cyberbee.msu.edu) You
can look at a picture of Einstein through a bee's eye or find out about
tracking bees with tiny bar codes.

I'm surprised that Merit actually controls iris borers as well as it does,
since it really isn't very effective against most caterpillars. Good that
it does though. I still use Cygon (just one spray when the oaks are at the
mouse ear stage -- midseason siberians are about 8-12 inches high). This
sometimes means the typhifolia type are already in bloom but they don't
seem to mind the overspray. We have very little borer problem this way. One
other point that might be worth noting. As of last year, EPA took homeowner
uses off the label for Cygon, so technically it is illegal to use it for
borer control unless you have a commercial business. Maybe you should sell
an iris to a neighbor to keep on the right side of the law if you do use it!

Siberian bloom season is just about over and some rebloom is beginning here
-- just for discussion purposes here are ten cultivars that really looked
good as clumps this year: White Amber (lovely colors and masses of
bloom), Three Hand Star and Tom Schaefer from Jan and Marty, Magnum
Bordeaux and Lemon Veil (which gives really interesting colored seedlings)
from Bob and John at Ensata, Dirigo Ruffled Feathers from John White -- a
pure clear blue with ruffles to burn), and Galadriel, Flutter by Butterfly,
Emily Anne and Blueberry Fair of ours. We also have cultivated a tetraploid
version of Sultan's Ruby (it's a chimera with occasional tetraploid parts)
that looked superb -- almost black-red. Anyone want to add their
favorites? Bob
