Shipping pollen is not that difficult. The point to remember is that it should be kept DRY.
Using tweezers, harvest the anther from the fresh flower. Place it in an emtpy gelatin capsule O or larger, available at most pharmacies. Close the capsule and puncture several holes in the side of it to allow air exchange. Place the capsule in a small vial along with a dry silica gel packet. Your pharmacist should be able to give you the silica gel.

Although pollen size is a fair indicator of tetraploidy, it is not fool proof. Time of harvest and moisture can affect pollen size. I have noticed when digging and dividing Siberian irises in the fall that the roots of tetraploids are consistently larger than those of diploids. The definitive test of tetraploidy for the home gardener is to do a PROTECTED crosses using pollen from the plant in question on known fertile diploids and tetraploids.
