{Disarmed} Re: Hi from New Member

Hi - I always have my Sibs. mulched all year long every year. I keep added pine straw (needles) since they decompose and 'feed'  the Sibs.

Regarding Zones: I think it is more complicated than the old minimum lowest temperature that the USDA used to have and still employs as far as I know. I think we might have one the latest iris bloom seasons up here in the mountains. Case in point, as of today, June 8th, I have exactly 8 irises in bloom out of more than 200 (and two have gone by). Most of these are IBs and the first Siberian bloomed today. Not Iris typhifolia but 'Sweet Little Susie' - the same as last year. She beat out typhifolia and also its child, 'China Spring'. Used to be that 'Snow Prince' would bloom first after typhifolia but when Susie matured, she always is the first.

For what it's worth:  I always mulch the newly planted iris the first fall & winter.  This includes the Siberians, of which I. Sanguinea is one ancestor.  Since I live in northwest Iowa, I would think our winters would not be too different, thus mulching would seem to be in order for you, too.  We were always considered USDA zone 4, but a recent publication from the Arbor Day Foundation showed an new zonal map with us definitely in zone 5.  I'm not sure what zone you are in, but you can easily check that and act accordingly.

Best wishes!
