Jim,
I had some snaky stalks on some my siberians. I observed that such a stalks
were on the plants which I replanted last August. The clumps were with 3-4
fans. On the plants which have grown two years such a stalks I did not
observed. I did not observed snaky stalks on well established clumps too. In
the seedling bed /third year of growth/ flowered almost all seedlings, but
stronger plants have right stalks and those not wigorous snaky, or one right
another snaky. And many of that snaky stalks did not became right and
flowered curiuos keeping flower some cm from ground level. The growth
conditions for all plants were the same. Though we had cool spring, but no
frosts. We had sufficient watering and heat came to us after showing this
phenomenon. I think it belongs from biological reason. As you know the
embryo of bud is forming in the last season of growth. If conditions are not
sufficient to end this process it continuous in early season of
next -flowering year. Maybe the lack of growth force and maintenance are not
sufficient for both to end bud forming and than good bloomstalk growth. Some
year observations on this phenomenon is need I think.
