I've had to sit here week after week and read bloom reports. In my garden,
I was beginning to consider myself lucky that I had a couple of buds showing.
I had a single bloom of blue I. cristata on June 16, and then a few days
later I noticed a bloom on a dwarf bearded. The DB bloomed so deeply in the
foliage that all one can see is a minor flash of yellow. Then a second DB
did the same. Different name, same stunted growth.
The morning of June 23, I almost hesitantly checked my garden, again.
Finally, a bloom - it was a deep, dark blue I. setosa. But wait, a Siberian
bud looked like it was trying to unfurl. I looked toward the heavens and
noted that for the first time in about a week there were signs that we
might have some sunshine for part of the day.
I couldn't help myself. I made nearly hourly checks on that Siberian, and
at about 3 PM I found it in bloom. By 6:30 PM the clump had two open
blooms. The tallest is 43". The plant - SNOW PRINCE -
It looks as though, if we manage a day or two of sunlight, that Gatineau,
Silver Edge and Caesar's Brother will bloom in the next day or two,
probably in that order.
This is my first year with Siberians and I was beginning to have serious
doubts that our weather would let them bloom. However, I did speak with a
fellow in Northwestern Washington state on 6/22 and he said he was having
the same delayed bloom.
I guess when they are ready, they will bloom.
