Howard et al,

Perhaps the history of the Siberian Robin is in order for newer members. We
are NOT an adjunct of the Society for Siberian Irises. Now comes the tricky
part...we are recognized as a Robin of the American Iris Society. Mainly
because Libby Cross, AIS Mama Robin, suggested to me over three years ago
that if I was interested in an e-mail Siberian Robin to start one. In a
moment of weakness and/or folly, I did just that. We started in March of
1997 with 6 Siberian fanciers from the general iris-list where TBs or at
least bearded irises were discussed in detail. We moved to ONElist in
October of 1998 and we now have 138
member addresses on the roster.

I think the rules of the AIS robin program state OR it is understood that
members of AIS robins be members of AIS. BUT as the societies have the same
regulations and are lax in applying it, this SIBROB with me as the
bedraggled owner is also lax in applying rules. This is the internet and is
a totally different medium. I would rather have folks be exposed to Siberian
irises through the SIBROB and start growing them than to have them meet
requirements of membership. It is suggested in the welcome message that
membership in AIS is encouraged and particularly membership in the Society
for Siberian Irises. That is all we can do and I think it is
counterproductive on all fronts to
enforce any rules on membership.

For instance, the iris-talk list has never had any requirements for
membership and has always been a free list as the SIBROB is. There is no
question that the AIS has "recruited" new members from that list and I don't
know if the SIBROB has and don't see that as an issue.

I like to think that we have exposed folks to Siberians irises and that is
the raison d'etre of this list. We do work closely with the Society for
Siberian Irises and certainly support it in every way.

Top o' the mornin' to you all,

Ellen McShane Gallagher ;)

p.s. Howard, I hope my dues are paid up.
