Bloom Report

The bloom season in Maryland is winding to a close but it was one of the best that I can remember. DEMURE ILLINI took queen of our show last week beating out a perfect three bloom stalk of the tall bearded, SONG OF NORWAY.

My bloom has lasted for over three weeks and there will still be bloom for another week or so. We are running about two weeks ahead of "normal" bloom time on everything. The earliest bloom started with WINDWOOD SERENADE, SWEET SURRENDER, INDY, and DANCE BALLERINA DANCE. SWEET SURRENDER still has one flower left open. Those that have impressed me the most this season have been: SPIRIT OF YORK, PINK SPARKLE, TROPIC NIGHT, ESTHER C. D. M., JAYBIRD, HARPSWELL SNOWBURST, HARPSWELL VELVET, HIGH STANDARDS and SHAKER'S PRAYER. All of these are older varieties but still offer exceptional landscape appeal. All of the guests for the 2001 convention, which were planted over a year ago, bloomed and show some new improvements in color and form. Most were short and some have the terrible tendency to open two flowers at once right on top of each other but hopefully they will perform better next season when so many will be here to see them. All of Marty and Jan's introductions from !
1999 bloomed. I was most impressed with SHIPS ARE SAILING ('98) and SUMMER REVELS. Everyone's favorite guests were SOMEBODY LOVES ME (soon to be called "Everybody Loves Me") and SHIPS ARE SAILING.

I have never been a fan of the multipetaled varieties but this year they really looked good. NAGAREBOSHI and PARASOL (formerly "Harasugata") made lovely garden clumps. The multipetals from Bob and John at Ensata looked remarkably well. KABLUEY and SHEBANG were organized in appearance, grew well and bloomed on first year plants.

It seems like we are all busy at bloom time but this really is the best time to compare notes and hear how plants are doing in other areas. I look forward to seeing many of you in Iowa next weekend.

Carol, Zone 6/7
