After some wonderfully warm and sunny weather, a new baby decided to open
her first bloom just in time for thunderstorms and hail!
The new kid is very species Siberica looking. 2 years old this year with 14
fans. She's blooming at 31" with blooms held 6 to 8" above the 3/8" wide
foliage. Leaves have a gentle twist to them but quite a few of these kids
show this trait early in the season.
Branching could be better since 4 of the 5 stems show only one and the
tallest shows 2 branches. Can't fault the number of buds... 3 terminal buds
plus the 2 on each of the branches.
Falls are blue violet with a large white signal and a pale green wash deep
in the throat. Standards are violet. Styles are what caught my eye... the
tips are outlined in violet but the color is a bright lavender *pink*.
Color and pattern resembles that of the setosas but there's no setosa in
her family. The combination is a bit jarring at first but pretty. :)
Only Siberian in bloom is SPRINGS BROOK who has one bloom open an inch from
the ground. The other Siberians don't even show buds yet. SDBs are in full
bloom, setosas are just beginning to open, TBs are budded up, and at least
6 more seedlings from this batch are showing buds.
Even better, my daughter and her husband offered to clean the largest of
the TB beds after I overdid the digging and wound up on the sidelines with
an ankle injury. Plants in exchange for some very hard work loaded their
pickup to the max.
9 year old grandson, when not collecting every bug in sight, got his first
lessons in dowsing and looks like he might be a natural. Life is good...
