Mine is I. chrysographes, the near-black, that I acquired from a man
in coastal Alaska zone 5. I certainly wouldn't say I've had good
luck
with it so far. This is its third year in my garden, and it still
hasn't managed to either bloom or increase past the single rhiz it
started out as. It already seems happier, however, in the much
damper
location I moved it to last summer. I really wasn't expecting it to
survive this past winter, but I'm sure glad it did. Now that I know
you've successfully grown it in your zone 3, I'll quit waiting for it
to die and send it far more positive vibes. That should help. :-)

Do you know a source? It sounds like it would make an interesting
addition to my garden. What color is it?

After reading Ginny Spoon's article in one of the more recent AIS
bulletins, I have been treating rot with a Triclosan hand soap
instead
of Comet. So far, so good. It seems to be pretty effective at
halting rot in progress. It's already saved one of the IMMORTALITY
rhizs I planted last year. It started to rot more than a month ago,
so I poured some soap over it, and now it's putting out aggressive
growth on 5 new increases.

I get a kick out of this every time I see it in your sig.
