Re: [Fwd: Virus]

Ellen,

The cracker is using a virus (actually it's a worm) that infects a
computer system and automatically sends a copy of itself to the
addresses in the unread e-mail. When activated from the attachment, it
also puts a file and program into MS Windows which acts as a backdoor
into the computer, so the cracker can gain direct access to your
computer.

Doubtless, you are receiving so many of these messages, because your
address is on a number of unread e-mail messages on the infected
computer/s. Any of us who has sent a message to <sibrob@yahoogroups.com>
can expect to receive this worm in messages from all infected computer
systems which have our unread e-mail messages in their folders.

Eddie Johns is just another victim in all of this. He's certainly no
cracker by any means. His computer system has likely either been
infected with the worm sending the messages, or (less likely) the
attacker is forging messages to make it falsely appear as if the
messages are coming from Eddie Johns.

A 'cracker' is a person who maliciously violates the security and
privacy of a computer system, and a 'hacker' is a person who does so
without malicious intent or consequences. The news media typically fails
to note the difference in the terminology. I like the crumbly kind in my
chili con carne <g>.

For more information about this worm and what list members may do to
deal with the worm and its infections, see:
