Re: Planting time

SIBEs from growers and the results this spring:

early as possible, the best in end of July or begin of August to
have plants established the best. I had parcel from Aitken's
with JI in mid of July and the plants after planting have grown
so strong like they were planted in spring and growth now in
spring is very good. <<<

Oh, yes Edmundas, how true for those of us in frigid climates
with a very short growing season (before the next frost in
Fall). We can't waste any time. :) However, I have found that
SOME Siberians do well even if planted in late Aug. Depends on
how big or 'old' the SIBS are. I rec'd some of the Hollingworths
intros last Aug. and they are doing great. The size of the
divisions helps us tremendously.

However, that is not true for bearded irises for the most part.
I have lost new bearded intros. (medians) planted after mid-Aug
and I don't buy any new TB intros. after I lost some two years
ago.

I have given up on Spring shipment almost entirely simply
because we still have snow and the ground is frozen when most
shippers are able to send them out - I speak only of Siberians.

Also, most growers WILL try to accomodate special needs - I
can't remember any who didn't try to hit my planting time. These
growers are usually hybridizers and are busy garden people.

Raining today off and on,

Ellen
