As a rank amateur in these things, I guess I just lucked out and
did the right thing without knowing it. About 3 weeks ago I received some
Siberians which I just got into soil as soon as possible, the soil being a
mixture of plain Iowa garden dirt and compost, about half/half. The
foliage of most of them was yellowing, so I wanted them in dirt as quickly as
possible. In a week all were showing new growth. This is what I've always
done when Sibs arrived, and I've not lost any yet. Dumb luck?
Probably, since I am certainly not any kind of expert, but this works very
well. The pots sit in full sun on the concrete driveway, get watered every
day or 2, depending on the weather, and sitting out there they have wonderful
drainage as well as warmth. I know the standard advice is to soak them in
water before planting, but I've never done it. Can' t argue with
success.
