Re: frozen pollen

Hi Ellen,

The majority of my crosses are done with frozen pollen since I can't count
on the weather or bloom times cooperating. With our weird weather not every
iris will bloom every year so it's best to be prepared.

I harvest the anthers about 2-3 days before the bloom would have opened,
then allow them to dry inside out of the sun for 2-3 days before popping
them into a labeled airtight container (film canisters preferred) along with
a desiccant. The longest I've had pollen remain viable is 2 years though I
prefer to use pollen from the current or previous season if it's available.
