Re: Esther CDM x I. typhifolia

I have never done any of the kind of crosses you mention, Ellen, in fact, I've never done any at all--not my interest. BUT, I have growing in a pot some seedlings from precisely that cross, Esther CDM x I. typhifolia. They were sent to me by a friend who got them directly from Dave Niswonger, so many seeds that the friend had some to spare. From Niswonger he also got and sent to me seeds of Illini Ruby x typhifolia and of Four Winds x typhifolia, and some of those are growing, too. I'm assuming this means that Niswonger must have done the kind of pollen saving to which you are referring. I've been too lax in getting them out of the pot and into the ground, but they are at least growing in the pot. By now it is too late in the season to be uprooting and putting them into the ground, I suppose (or not????) so I will leave the pot buried for another winter and plant out the seedlings next spring. And if that isn't the thing to do, somebody knowledgeable please tell me quickly. I'm a dummy about these things.
