Hi Laurie,
I've been using a method of "popping" the petals off of unopened buds
whether I plan to use the bloom for pod or pollen parent. Opened this early,
the pollen hasn't gotten fluffy yet, so there's almost no chance of selfing.
(I had a small article on this in the Spring '01 SIGNA newsletter with a
sketch showing how this is done.) The pollen will fluff up nicely as it
ripens in about a day.
It takes some practice but once you get used to it it's faster than any
other method I've tried. Just cut through the petals at the base and gently
pull them away from the rest of the bud to loosen. (Care has to be taken not
to cut through the slender tube in the center that supports the stylearms.)
Then "pop" the petals off by grasping the very tip and yanking upward.
The anthers should be dry enough to store easily. If not, chances are the
pollen may not be dry enough either.
