Hi Margaret,

Sounds like slugs of one kind or other. They do that kind of damage. They
are out in force after the rain and ravenous after hiding out during the dry
weather. Go out after dark with a flash light and a spray bottle of 50%
ammonia and 50% water and if you see any, one squirt per slug will do the
job.
