Hi Bill and all, sorry to be quiet on the issue of siberian test gardens for
so long. It's taking Jan and me time to discuss our thoughts.
Initially I was against the idea for some of the reasons Bob laid out. It is
difficult to manage stock of new seedlings and get them introduced in a
timely manner with all of the requests for guests (AND have enough flowers to
breed with to go on to the next generation). On the other hand, I would like
to support anyone who has the energy to pursue this project. Is there any
reason why a test garden has to feature the very latest material? It would
be much easier to supply introductions that are a few years old. Also the
English have a test program that runs three years or so and then starts again
with no yearly additions. Everything comes in at the same time and is judged
at some appropriate time or times.
