Re: Over wintering of potted Sibs

From: "Leroy Kriese" <ambrosia@silk.net>

I have done this frequently over the years in zone 5 and zone 2 (when I was
in Alberta).

This may sound all wrong but it is what I experienced.

The times I went to great lengths to heal the potted Siberians into sawdust
or cover them etc etc I had nothing but dead rotten sibs come spring. Was
careful to water in heavily just before freeze as well.

When I just neglected them - left them uncovered (nonconsistant snowcover as
well) and let them dry out after they went dormant they come through at a
much higher rate of success. I think that siberians once they go dormant in
a pot they don't like wet feet. One of these plants that they say are
susceptable to winter drowning? More suscepatable to drowning than freezing.
Most temparate zone plants can take very low root temparatures. some
Siberians don't overwinter very well at all, sino-sibs seem to rot out in
pots over winter.

The mix I use is a commercial recipe that we mix at the nursery, the recipe
comes right out of the provincial nursery guide. Consists of peat, sawdust
(we use hog fuel), sharp sand, nutricote, dolomite lime, gypsum,
micro-nutrients, tri-phosphate, (double is better). Sawdust is just a cheap
inert filler. Sharp sand is the key, found that increasing it makes
healthier plants but tired arms.

Feel tired now.

Good night.
