Diana,
I can only speak from experience. I received an order of Sibs from a warmer
climate when I was living in a zone 2 climate, west of Olds AB . Very cold
(snow any month of the year) and still in the chinook belt.
It came so late the ground was already frozen about 2 -3 " down. I used a
pick and broke through the frost and dug a trench for healing in. I put some
dry peat moss in bottom of trench and settled the divisions into this. I
then backfilled with a combination of frozen lumps and nonfrozen peat. I
took a bucket of warm water and sloshed this over the whole mess in the
trench. Not too much H2O, just enough to moisten the peat a bit. Then at
least another foot of peat on top, then spruce boughs to hold snow and keep
wind from blowing peat.
Those plants looked as good the following spring as the day they went into
the trench. I transferred them to where they were supposed to be before they
started to grow in early spring. The key is to just hold them, heal them in,
for the cold winter. If you get a lot of cold wet rain in winter this may be
another problem to deal with if drainage is not very good.
It worked for me, hope you can figure something out. Siberians are tough but
beautiful plants!
