There have been SA plants from non SA parents and it's clear that SA is not a recessive gene. So its either a partial dominant or a multiple gene controlled factor.
The genes for SA have been around for a long time. I posted some info several weeks ago re appendages on pallida seedlings from ancient times( close to 100 years ago). Thus genes have been floating around for some time and may be present in many cultivars but never have accumulated enough dosages to show in a seedling. The genes didn't start with Austin. He just worked on getting the appendages, probably from cumulating multiple dosages of SA genes. Thus genes can be present but not show anything in family tree as they came from an ancient, even species origin.
