Neil, it is very interesting!
I can share my observations.
Huge Oregon grown rhizomes of DON'T TOUCH, ANNOUNCEMENT and DETROIT CITY
was planted in August 2003 on one bed. Though last winter was mild enough
we
had harsh freezes early in May and a lot of iris was frozen. ANNOUNCEMENT was frozen too and has produced very short stalk with deformed
flower but this flower was with flounces! DON'T TOUCH and DETROIT CITY was not
frozen at all have produced tall show stalks but their flowers were without
horns.
It sounds there are different traits: the frost hardiness and the ability
to produce appendages. And they aren't close related.
