Re: [SpaceAgeRobin] Re: HYB:SA appendages and SKY HOOK flounces

Juri,

Hmmmmm.... interesting but I don't know what to make of this.  One
would assume that the better growing plants would produce the
appendages and the frozen one would not.  The really blows my theory
of freeze thaw cycles effecting appendage develpoment in to space.
Welcome to the club! With a record breaking heat wave in spring producing a lot of SA _expression_ I was sure that HIGH temperatures caused appendage developement. A mild summer and a warm fall brought the best quality horns and flounces so that theory got squashed. Abnormal seasonal temperatures such as freeze/thaw cycles or heat waves do put the plant under stress and trigger strong survival traits that must include SA type expressions. Flower petals are used by the plant to regulate the temperature of the reproductive organs so I can understand the plant developing flounces for extra cooling . Now beard extentions have me in a quandry. Are horizontal extentions a stronger invitation to pollinizers? Are extentions that grow vertically intended to prevent pollinizers from getting to the stigmatic lips? I don't understand what survival traits are at work here.

Anyway... Here is SKY HOOKS the major progenitor of our current SA's. I have attached a pix of the normal beard even most are familar with it. The second pix is what developed from the stress of a hot spring. SH obviously carries the genes for beard extentions both vertical and horizontal as well as flounces.
Perhaps it's the concentration of SA genes in ANNOUNCEMENT that
allowed it to express these flounces.
Neil already posted the parentage showing its from a SA X SA cross. ANNOUNCEMENT has great flounces in cooler Oregon but here in the central valley of California it usually has double appendages. Regretfully our recent hard frost turned the rebloom on LOOKOUT POINT and ANNOUNCEMENT to mush before they were fully open so never got to see what kind of cold weather SA _expression_ they might have. Both are still trying to set bloom so maybe we will get lucky by years end...
I'd be curious to know the
parentage.  This might be an indication that ANNOUNCEMENT may be a
good breeder for SA _expression_ in colder climates but perhaps it's
genetically unstable and will never bloom properly for you like a few
SA's I have here like LURID and DIETY.  Please let us know how
ANNOUNCEMENT does this Spring.

DAUBER'S DELIGHT bloomed with marvelous spoons here after a Russian
like winter here in Canada but the plant was not very hardy and
died.  I'm thinking of trying BLUE FIN instead since it does well for
Chuck Chapman.

Chris
BF is very consistent and hardy for us but DAUBER'S SURPRISE has a much stronger tendency to flounce with quite a few poly-flounces or rosettes.
