Re: red irises (War Chief)


Bill, your WAR CHIEF is a beauty.  I think you're right--there isn't going to be much improvement in reds beyond what we're seeing here as far as color goes.  Anything more is going to require some transformations (or transplants) in the anthocyanin pigments.
 
It is technically possible to transplant Gladiolus pigment genes into iris--but that can't be done unless the technician knows *which* chromosome the gene is on and where on the chromosome it is, that is, if only one gene is involved. 
 
To the best of my knowledge that work hasn't been done, and won't be unless someone has megabucks to have it done, and shells it out. I don't think the event is real likely anytime soon.
