Re: LANAI/CORDOBA/PURE AS GOLD

Bill's comment on excluding a variety (in this case, Lanai and possibly Pure as Gold) from the SAGE project makes sense to me.  One of our co-lateral objectives is to produce worthy-of-introduction irises as payoff for the amount of work required in just wading through the procedures of the project.  We might as well have as good results quality and health-wise as is possible.

I had a problem with Cordoba at first.  Keppel sent me a second rhizome and it has done wonderfully well, as has the surviving tid-bit from the first try.  I think I am learning that just because "this" rhizome doesn't behave well doesn't mean necessarily the variety isn't ok.  There're too many variables of exposure, light, soil and culture that can make the best iris a miffy do-er.  My first move if I see a problem is to move the plant to a location that might give the thing a fighting chance.  If it is still stalled and its one I definitely want, I might try getting a new rhiz of the thing.  Several times that has solved the problem.

I suspect that the poor-performing rhizome may have picked up Verticillium or Fusariam organisms or something analogous.  They do affect irises, but not usually very seriously.
